Can Research Still Change Policy? Two of the architects of modern European research policy take stock.

Join us at the Complexity Science Hub for a public discussion on Monday, May 4, at 17:00.

Many early-career researchers want their work to make a difference in the world. But how? Is engaging with policy still a promising career path, and if so, how does one go about it? How can policymakers facilitate such paths? These questions matter especially in complexity science, where mathematical models and data are brought to bear on social phenomena, connecting disciplines along the way.

In a public conversation at the Complexity Science Hub, Helga Nowotny (former President of the European Research Council and Chair of the CSH Advisory Board) and Dominique Foray (one of the architects of the smart specialization framework that now governs how every European region articulates its innovation agenda) look back on careers that have shaped how Europe thinks about science, knowledge, and innovation. They reflect on why academic research matters for policymaking, and on why integrating academic findings into policy is so difficult in practice. A particular focus of the conversation will be how the current generation of early-career researchers can engage with the policy world, and what trade-offs it may face along the way.

The discussion is open to the public and is part of the CSH Policy Workshop, which brings together early-career researchers and policymakers to explore how complexity science and policy can engage with each other more productively.
