From the dawn of mechanization to the rise of AI, machines have taken over task after human task – transforming work, making us richer, and testing our ability to adapt. Is this time different?
For as long as we have built machines, we have built them to take over human work. Work did not end. It was transformed: what we do, how it is organized, and where it happens. Collectively, this made us richer, moving labor to more productive uses and spurring investment in education, training and health. But adjustment had a price, paid unevenly: some learned new skills or moved, some retired early or took jobs where their skills lay idle. Institutions mattered: workers fared better where countries invested in them and gave them a voice. AI parallels past technologies, but also differs. Can this time be different?
