The Growth CoLab at CEU is a research collaboration between faculty and researchers at the Growth Lab at Harvard University, the Complexity Science Hub (CSH) and the Central European University (CEU). The CoLab pursues projects that address current challenges of economic development policy by working in teams of scientists, practitioners and students of public policy. It serves as a teaching hospital in public policy for the students of the affiliated organizations. We leverage decades of expertise in connecting science with policy across three leading organizations. The CoLab was established in 2024, and is based at CEU.
THE POSITION
The intern will assist us in the project “Opportunity in Crisis – Empowering Ukrainian Refugees to Rebuild the Ukrainian Economy” in the course of eight weeks in the Summer 2025. The intern will work with senior researchers in the project to help develop a survey methodology for studying diasporas, in this case, the Global Ukrainian Community. Our objective is to create a state-of-the-art diaspora survey, innovating both in terms of survey design and survey implementation.
This is a paid part-time (20h per week) internship, and the pay follows the FWF salary recommendations for student employees. The intern will be formally employed as a research assistant with the Complexity Science Hub.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
The work of the intern will involve a combination of analytical and field work. More specifically, the intern will contribute in the following ways:
Review existing surveys and survey-based studies of the displaced Ukrainians and the Global Ukrainian Community. Synthesize and present findings.
Review methodological literature on population surveys.
Help co-design a diaspora survey questionnaire.
Liaise with civil society organizations, governmental organizations and private sector organizations to understand the opportunities and challenges of survey implementation.
YOUR PROFILE
The ideal candidate has:
A bachelor's degree in economics or related quantitative social sciences.
Interest in the topics of migration and economic development.
Has strong statistical background - excellent achievement in subjects such as statistics, econometrics, data science.
Experience analyzing micro-level data using software such as R, Python and/or Stata.
Excellent communication skills in English.
Knowledge of these languages could be an asset: German, Ukrainian, Russian, Polish.
